Vol. 9 No. 3 (2026): Revista Insignare Scientia (RIS): Special Edition: Knowledge from the South: Science and Biology Teaching
The Revista Insignare Scientia - RIS is a collective effort resulting from the work carried out at the Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul - UFFS, Campus Cerro Largo - RS, in the field of Sciences, linked to the Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Ensino de Ciências e Matemática - GEPECIEM and the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ensino de Ciências - PPGEC. We have indexing processes in different databases. These listings allow the magazine to be featured in national and international directories, thus increasing the dissemination and visibility of the research published worldwide.
The special issue v. 9 n. 3 (2026) - Special Edition - Southern Knowledges: Science and Biology Teaching brings together 24 selected articles covering a variety of topics shared at the 11th Encontro Regional de Ensino de Biologia (EREBio Sul) held from 10/12/2025 to 10/14/2025 at the Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) – Campus Rebouças , creating a space for research, dialogue, and new learning. With the theme “Voices of the Southern Educator: 20 Years of Stories, Memories, and Resistances,” the event strengthened knowledge exchange among students, teachers, researchers, and the community as a whole, fostering debates and urgent reflections on issues present in people's everyday lives.
The event featured 296 approved and presented papers, which led to the selection of 70 Research Reports divided among three journals in the field (Context & Education, Revista Insignare Scientia, and Vitruvian Cogitationes). Volume 9, N. 3 (2026) - Knowledge from the South: Science and Biology Teaching - includes the development of 24 selected papers that expanded reflections and discussions on the theoretical, methodological, and practical assumptions of Biology Teaching, reaffirming the importance of research and training committed to scientific education and contemporary socio-educational issues.
From this perspective, teaching Biology requires a foundation based on ethical commitment, critical thinking, social participation, and political awareness, which demands bringing together the emerging voices of historical subjects, whose knowledge and experiences are shaped by specific social, environmental, and temporal contexts that science can no longer ignore. In this sense, sociocultural interaction, promoted by scientific and academic events in the field, becomes an essential channel to broaden plural dialogues, enhancing the principles of fruitful knowledge exchange and co-production of knowledge.
It becomes imperative to recognize that Biology is intrinsically linked to the daily lives of everyone in society. Consequently, a cross-cutting discussion of historical, social, educational, political, economic, scientific, and technological factors encourages critical questioning and analysis that are essential for (re)shaping the knowledge needed for teaching in the field. It is evident, then, that teaching Biology involves bringing together a variety of voices that guide teaching and learning relationships. From the perspective of local specifics, this process becomes a space for resistance and genuine sociopolitical engagement.
Given the above, we invite the academic community and other readers to check out the articles gathered in this special edition of Revista Insignare Scientia, a publication that not only highlights the work but also the debates in the field and the consolidation of the historical memory of the XI EREBio Sul.
We also take this opportunity to thank the reviewers and editors of the volume and sections who donate their time to foster new learning, as well as the researchers who submitted their work for this editorial.
Long live RIS!
We wish everyone a good read!
