Abstract

The Case Study (CS) is a student-centered teaching method, who have the opportunity to actively develop their learning. Through a case, which is a real or fictional story of everyday life, the student is asked to solve a dilemma and, thus, is expected to develop superior skills such as critical thinking, communication, problem solving, and collaborative work. Through this literature review, it was possible to analyze research on CS methodology in the Chemistry Teaching area in the last decade in relation to the objectives, main results and perceptions of the subjects involved. Forty-two articles were evaluated, most focusing on higher education and covering several Chemistry areas with an emphasis on General Chemistry. The results indicate that the CS method can be effective in the conceptual and attitudinal development of students. Regarding the perceptions of the subjects involved, although some teachers are resistant, most students approve the use of CS in classes.
