This paper discusses the changes produced by the process of urbanization on the island of Santa Catarina in the spaces once considered "rural." Through the practice of cassava cultivation, production of flour and the reemergence of the meetings of the owners of bullock carts, the paper seeks to demonstrate that despite the prevailing discourses point to the emptying of the practices of rurality, promoted exchanges between the "rural" and "urban" experience one partner allow cultural universe more complex than supposed the old dichotomy that placed on opposite sides countryside and city.
