Abstract

One of the aims of this article is to examine the process of metropolization of space within the metropolis itself, more specifically in its central area. Since their emergence as “mother cities”, metropolises have undergone profound metamorphoses in their production and organization. It is therefore imperative to analyze which metropolis we are dealing with. Furthermore, in this scenario, it is essential to understand the processes of restructuring and metropolization of space, and their conjunctures within the central areas of the metropolises. In order to accomplish these tasks, we used a literature review, mainly based on the works of the Brazilian geographer Sandra Lencioni, US geographer Edward Soja and French philosopher Henri Lefebvre. The first author provided us with dense material to examine metropolises and the metropolization of space, as well as the debate on totality and why analytical triads are used. The second author collaborated with our endeavor, above all through the debate on urban restructuring. The third, in addition to other points, helped us discuss the triad of homogenization, fragmentation and hierarchization of space. From this perspective, we have concluded that it is important to analyze the essence of spatial phenomena in order to find possibilities and openings to get out of the condition of an increasingly trivialized, segregated space with degrees of importance according to the logic of capitalist social relations.
