This article proposes to discuss Nossa Senhora do Rosário’s Party in Itajaí (SC), Brazil, based on the construction of the identity of the black population. Aiming at contextualizing the different historical moments experienced by the party, we discuss the reason for the change in the organization of the party from the brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Rosário to the black movement. The party, which had its origins in the 19th century, is currently a central activity in the process of black resistance in Santa Catarina. The article uses the methodology of oral history, as well as data collected in primary sources safeguarded in the Public Archive of Itajaí.
