The contemporary acceleration of globalization is the result of the formalization of technical knowledge and of the revolutions that have taken place in the fields of transportation and telecommunications. These changes have modified the organization of communication networks and have made obsolete the complex hierarchies that characterized urban systems a generation ago. Since economic functions now tend to be increasingly concentrated in the most important cities, the term metropolitanization is here considered to be more suitable for discussing these recent changes.
