This paper investigates the idea that public spaces are primarily defined as physical extensions, that is, as geographical entities. As such, they form an essential and central part of democratic life. Public spaces, however, are currently receding. This retreat can be observed both on their physical extent and on theis function as vehicles for social communication. Democratic life depends on the existence and proper functioning of public spaces. Difficulties of dialogue and the physical contraction of the public dimension directly challenge the foundations of democracy. Urban violence and the feeling of insecurity are also analyzed as part of this process, but the paper questions the possibility of establishing a causal link between these latter manifestations and the retreat of public spaces.
