The present discussion seeks to explore territorial diversity and Brazilian urbanization as a precondition for the consideration of theories relating to urban politics at national level. To this end, those characterisctics of diversity were taken into consideration which repeatedly suggested themselves as important elements in the understanding of society. This was equally valid when looking at Brazilian spatial differences and the non-homogeneous nature of the urban phenomenon at national level. In this context, the term urban diversity is used to indicate two different approaches: first, in the field of theory and thinking, and, secondly, in the field of political action. Having this in mind, we seek to address current issues in the realm of geographical science, initially with some reflections on the relevance of the characteristic of diversity, and then to look at the same characteristics focusing on the individual circumstances of the Amazon region. We conclude by indicating the urban elements that determine the specific nature of the Amazon region and attempt to highlight the urban diversity present in that region’s reality.
