Time has assumed an important role in the geographical analysis of urban formations. In addition to their definition as spatial forms, cities are now increasingly considered as content-forms, a theoretical and methodological shift that delegated to history an important explanatory power in the analysis of urban space. Another main conceptual change pertains to the nature of time. Starting from a conception of hegemonic time as the sole determinant of urban dynamics, researchers are now considering that urban forms can be interpreted according to a plurality of times. This article discusses these theoretical propositions, giving emphasis to the contributions made by urban geographers to the analysis of urban formations.
