Resumen

The present work discusses the representations of the leper asylums in the state of São Paulo as difficult heritage, since these spaces were the scene of the compulsory isolation of leprosy that began in the first half of the 20th century and extended until the1980s. In this sense, patrimonialization involves a context of reparation for the trauma suffered by those who have experienced isolation as prophylaxis, making patrimonialization understood as part of the recognition of the State as responsible for having promoted such a health policy. In addition, the patrimonialization of spaces marked by experiences of suffering meet a social demand and help in the promotion of a debate with different groups to deconstruct the stigma of leprosy and what are the meanings of compulsory isolation, since it has not been able to eradicate the disease in the country.
