In this historical narrative, an essay, we analyzed the main changes that have taken place in Brazilian families of the urban middle class, between 1980 and 2000. These changes in social relations are associated with a number of factors: the social movements of Feminism and the Counterculture, medical advances and the spread of individualistic and egalitarian values in Brazil. These changes are expressed in the set of laws that came into force in the country in that period.
