The event known as Novembrada occurred on November 30, 1979, in Florianópolis. Students organized a protest act against the visit of the country’s president, João Batista Figueiredo. Some people watching the solemnity at XV de Novembro Square joined the students, who were manifesting against the dictatorial regime by shouting mottos against scarceness and salary crunch, and expressing the inefficiency of the military government in resolving the economic crisis. The event was marked by the truculence of the president of the Republic in dealing with the students, commanding arrests and indicting them for felony against National Security Law; the movement went on the streets for days, in protest for those imprisonments. The women participated actively of Novembrada, in acts of solidarity. Many were taken to jail. Their memories highlight resistance, power and gender relations.
