Abstract

This article discusses methodological and epistemological aspects that permeate the use of cultural products as sources and objects of study. Thereby, it is useful to reflect upon some specific approaches that focus on the study of derivatives of the culture industry: Frankfurt School, Birmingham Group and the so-called textualists. While reflecting and choosing the most appropriate approach, an analysis of a Brazilian film produced during Estado Novo (Pureza) will be outlined to substantiate the theoretical and methodological effort.

Keywords: Estado Novo, Frankfurt, Birmingham, textualism, cinema.
