Abstract

This work analyzes the cinematographic activity of Torquato Neto, a Tropicália icon. Two 1972 films have been analyzed – O terror da Vermelha and Adão e Eva do Paraíso ao Consumo. This study allows the conclusion that the “cinema in freedom” pursued by Torquato Neto represents the highest point in the torquatean struggle to “destroy language and blow it up”, which was an expedient to avoid the social capture of his subjectivity. In addition to that, a great convergence was found between Torquato Neto’s “free cinema” and Hélio Oiticica’s “anti-art”.
