science and nature protection in A Lavoura [The Farming] (1909-1930)

The article examines the promotion and application of scientific principles at the countryside and the nature conservation in Brazil promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce (MAIC) between 1909 and 1930. With this official propaganda, the Ministry intended to expand awareness about the importance of agricultural modernization and product diversification. To impact the communication with the farmers of the country, the MAIC in collaboration with the National Agriculture Society (SNA) distributed magazines such as A Lavoura [The Farming], the specific case of study in this text. The article analyzes how the magazine's writers, especially scientists subordinated to the MAIC, understood the natural world, the social type that they addressed their biggest criticisms - the so-called Brazilian Caboclo - and the measures proposed to manage the destruction of nature, especially a Federal Forest Code
