Vertical cities – a new standard of modern cities
a case study on the urban verticalization of Campina Grande/PB and its social and environmental impacts (1960-2012)

This article aims to analyze the social and environmental impacts caused by the urban verticalization process in the city of Campina Grande/PB, in the range between the 1960’s and 2012, the period in which the first three buildings in the until now, the peak of the city's urban verticalization. For this purpose, the sources used consist of interviews obtained through the methodology in Oral History, photographic and journalistic sources and the Municipal Master Plan, published in 1996 and updated in 2006. The theoretical-methodological field used is based on the exponents of Environmental History. From this work, we seek to foster a discussion about the urban transformations that surround us and their impacts on the environment, thus problematizing the ideas of “development” and “progress” that justify urbanization projects.
