The National Historical Museum was designed to be a space of memory of the Brazilian military traditions. It is proved by the collection that gave rise to the museum in 1922 and the trajectory and political commitment of its idealizer, Gustavo Barroso. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the links between the perspective of memory and history of Gustavo Barroso and his close links with the social and political moment lived by the Brazilian Army after the Proclamation of the Republic. It is also proposed to raise some hypotheses about the material remains collected by military officers who acted in the repression of the Contestado movement that are part of the technical reserve of the National History Museum. It is hypothesized that the ideas of Barroso and the military converged in some aspects, namely, the valorization of Brazilian military history and memory in a context of disputes over the re-elaboration of the national memory.
