Abstract

The region of the High Uruguay comprises respectively the northern and southern boundaries of the of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina States, with the axis the upper course of the river Uruguay, whose boundaries are marked by its tributaries on both sides. This study turns to a small part of the region, set on the banks of Apuaê River between Rio Grande do Sul’s municipalities of Carlos Gomes and São João da Urtiga. In this place it was located the archaeological site AP.CG.1 whose remaining material traces us back to an ancient village Guarani, attesting therefore the remote occupation of this region, before the arrival of European settlers. Through the interpretative analysis of information resulting from archaeological research carried out in this place, we plan to conduct some inferences about the pre-colonial history of the Alto Uruguai.
