Abstract

The paper investigates the interaction between the climate crisis and social disparities in the Brazilian context, highlighting the disproportionate impacts of extreme climatic events in socioeconomically vulnerable areas. In this context, information about incidents such as floods, landslides, and collapses of barriers, recorded by Civil Defense between 2015 and 2022 in João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba, was organized. In total, 694 occurrences were identified, with some of them happening in months with monthly precipitation above average. The spatial analysis of the variables addressed revealed a significant concentration of these events in low-income urban areas, with limited access to infrastructure and urban services, historically affected by hydrometeorological disasters.
