Bom Retiro is a traditional neighborhood in the central area of São Paulo. Located in the suburbs, the District of Bom Retiro grew with the installation of the first railway company, which attracted residents, factories and other services. With the railroad the district became separated from the city, physically separated by the floodplains, the railway lines and the old Horto Florestal. A documentation located in the Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo elucidated how was this process of opening a new street to communicate the district with other parts of the city. Far from a simple adaptation of the urban layout, the opening of the new street involved protest from residents, disputes between government officials and a tragedy that was decisive for the outcome of the problem. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to identify the adjustments made in the urban layout of Bom Retiro and promote the connection of the district to the city.
