The present article discusses the process of social exclusion in the context of Brazilian middle-sized cities. The perverse logic of globalization and its impact on
the production of urban space are changing inter-city relationships and are being responsible for an increase in intra-urban inequalities. This process is well under way in the middle-sized cities of the state of São Paulo, which are now assuming new roles in the urban network. As a consequence of the weakness or
inexistence of popular movements in these cities, the inclusion of the well-off the residents in the new of circuits has been made at the expenseof the worsening of the living conditions of the great majority of the population.
