The purpose of this paper is to present the Grassroots Spatial Design concept as a part of a specific approach both to scientific analysis and to political action, with the aim of conceiving the social movements and organized communities from the viewpoint of their capacity as grassroots planners of both rural and urban spaces. This will allow an approach to the different troubles which these organizations must face, as well as to the organizational strategies and political goals to which they react. All of this is done here on the basis of an analysis of different experiences of organizations belonging to the Popular Urban Movement (mUP) in mexico City.
