This article is on the concept of segregation. Starting out with an explanation of the origins of the concept and with a brief review of the bibliography, the text proceeds to the discussion of its diverse applications in the literature. Residential segregation in Brazil is then examined from a historical perspective, including its Portuguese antecedents. The paper ends with a questioning of the application of the concept to Brazilian cities.
