This paper is concerned with the urban network, a neglected subject. In the first part the author discusses the urban network structure, that is, the dimensional, functional and spatial structure. The diversity of the urban network is the result of a complex process which is simultaneously cause and consequence. The second part of the article focuses on the Brazilian urban network, which has been submitted to a strong process of change. Six points are briefly discussed. Firstly, the attention is centered in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a declining national metropolis. Secondly, the author focuses on the diversity of regional metropolis, following the discussion on the variety of regional capitals. The growing importance of specialized centers, the role of rural land income drainage and the paths that small cities are taking are discussed.
