Why should an image of a city be produced? This question is the central concern of this article, which provides a few partial answers thanks to a few case studies: The making of an image for a city may serve to give birth or to enhance a political project, to blur some of its aspects, to assist a geopolitical design, or to carry on a propaganda aimed at attracting future inhabitants.
