This article analyzes and discusses the morphological changes underwent by six cities of Northern Portugal (Bragança, Chaves, Guimarães, Póvoa de Varzim, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real); in spite of their singularities, all of them are representative of the country’s contemporary urbanism and urban planning. Based on a detailed study of their urban evolution, the article questions some old and established truths about Portuguese urban planning. Although the first decree pertaining to urbanism on a national level is known to have been signed in 1864, it has become an established truth that the practice of urban planning in Portugal is a product of the Estado Novo and of the early thirties of the last century. In this paper we question this assertion.
