Abstract

This article discusses some theoretical elements for the analysis of the urbanization of society; the objective here is methodological and aimed at criticizing what we consider to be a restricted understanding of urbanization. Urbanization of society, which is an inseparable process of the urbanization of space, circumscribes, in fact, a weak analytical horizon. Given the broad scale of the concept, it demands some theoretical mediations and these are provided by the concepts of urban society and of metropolis. These concepts give strength to the analysis of contemporary society and establish the necessary connections between modernization, financial capitalism and the spatial/urban production of space.
