This paper adopts the perspective of essentiality in an attempt to grasp critical urbanization and the production of space, the former treated as a determinate moment of the latter. On the one hand, there is social reality, practical and contingent; on the other hand, social reality’s essential and process-like directionality composes the totalization of the urban through economy as well as the economicized urban, which is the source of the deepening social crisis. Empirically, the metropolis of São Paulo suggests this stage of economic expansion through the production of space. Urban geography takes part in this discussion, which includes its abstract-concrete foundations.
