The origin of this paper is a PhD thesis submitted to the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Design of the University of São Paulo in 2005, funded by the State of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). It deals with the production of gated communities’ open spaces in the city of São Paulo from the 1990’s onwards, as well as with those agents who take part in this production, such as house-builders, commercial property developers, contractors, designers/architects, landscape architects, residents, and the government (by means of legislation). The main goal is to demonstrate in which ways these agents influence and shape the mentioned open spaces.
