The essential role given to public space in the newly founded social movements and their political expressions are derived from an ideology that might be called citizenist which returns to the individual their role as the non-negotiable foundation of the mystic democraticness of the freely admitted obedience. The philosophical foundations that nourish this approach, in spite of its origins and radical appearance, are still a rewrite of the pragmatic concept of public, as the collective political subject grounded on consensus and negotiation between responsible and self-conscious beings. A subject conceived at the beginning of the early twentieth century in the shadow of bourgeois fear of the masses in the streets.
