This report presents an analysis of the more recent mechanisms of expansion in the metropolitan area of Fortaleza, in the Brazilian state of Ceará, which have resulted in changes in the urban fabric and suggest the development of a new spatial model, aligned with contemporary processes of urbanization. This article starts out by addressing the theoretical and conceptual aspects of current trends in urban development. It focuses on concepts related to the theme and on studies by other authors who have dealt with the newer aspects of urban development we have been witnessing since the last decades of the twentieth century, using them as a means to better understand the transformations underway in the study area. Following a description of the Fortaleza metropolitan region and some thoughts on the recent expansion of this metropolis, this paper goes on to analyze in greater depth one axis of urban growth - the one considered the most dynamic and causing the more significant changes, including a trend towards urban dispersion in some areas.
