This article aims to show the forms of urban sprawl from original data of BRASIpolis database. These data associates the shapes of urban agglomerations of Brasil, and population data in 2010. The approach by shape requires to discuss the words associated with urban sprawl by comparing in four languages: form, process, force and content are distinguished. Then, four unequivocal perspectives are set to observe urban sprawl by the form: scale of observation, land use patterns, rural environment, agglomerations structures. The relevance of these perspectives is justified by the description of examples of various agglomerations selected from the BRASIpolis database. The article is based on an experimental approach that assumes a continuation of research including the development of retrospective data to understand the process of urban sprawl.
