This paper takes stock of a series of research forays towards the urban frontiers on the east side of the city of São Paulo. We include the results of these incursions, which conform to aspects related to working methods, social programs and policies, cultural policies and their impacts on the lives and practices of these populations. The permeability of the world of crime, the presence of means of operationalizing policies and programs, the various partnerships that form new margins of the state, muddle categories and demand a reflection on the production of this new social, as a result of, and not as an assumption of, this set of practices linked to the production of social relations and urban space.
