This study investigates the impacts of scientific research on the learning process of basic education (BE) students and the role of public agencies. Aspects related to the experience of teachers as research project advisors, their challenges, the role of authorities, and how the development of research and participation in science fairs contribute to the teaching-learning process of students are explored. Data collection was carried out through interviews with teachers who supervise research projects in elementary, middle, and technical education in public and private institutions in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The results indicate a positive perception of student involvement in research initiatives, with clear signs of scientific maturity and the development of professional skills that set them apart from their peers. However, low financial and institutional support from schools and the government for fostering research projects was identified, despite institutions using award-winning works as showcases for the community. Overall, the need to create an environment of incentives and rewards, supported by the government and educational institutions, to promote research in basic education is highlighted.
