Genetics is the science that studies genes, heredity and the variation of characteristics, in order to understand the transmission of inheritance over generations, and its knowledge is of fundamental importance. This research aims to investigate the difficulties experienced in the study of Genetics by students of Biological Sciences and to understand the association of this area with everyday life. A qualitative-quantitative research was carried out with 40 students of the Degree in Biological Sciences at the State University of Ceará / Faculty of Education, Sciences and Letters of Iguatu. Data were collected through the application of a questionnaire and, based on these, graphs, tables and word clouds were created. From the results, it is clear how much the study of Genetics is permeated by challenges and difficulties, which can compromise students' learning, as well as the association of their knowledge with everyday life. Thus, it is of fundamental importance to develop strategies that strengthen teaching, favoring the understanding of the themes worked on and improving student performance during the course and in their professional activities.
