This article presents reflections on the importance of oral and written testimonies of those who experienced the Brazilian exile in the second half of last century. Based on the work of Paul Ricoeur, the text argues that subjective elements in the visions of the exiles should be problematized for the understanding of the traumatic experience of the exile. The memory’s elaboration by expatriates should be the object of analysis of History in order to understand continuities and ruptures in the views of exile built up until this moment.
Keywords: memory, exile, Military Dictatorship.
