Abstract

Through the analysis of Cacá Diegues’ Xica da Silva (1976), the article addresses the relations between cinema and history. A peculiar historical movie, because of its relations with comedy – specially with two popular styles from the Brazilian cinematography, chanchada and pornochanchada -, Xica da Silva allows a reflection on the ways historical meanings can be transformed by the cinematographic language, identifying humor as a strategy to elicit political awareness.

Keywords: Cinema Novo; historical movies; civil-military dictatorship; Cacá Diegues.
