By reading crime cases , investigates the biographies of two former African slaves in the early years of the republican regime in the then province of Santa Catarina. The cases point to the difficult experience they spent some former enslaved Africans or Creoles in the recent period the abolition of slavery in Brazil . However they created their survival strategies amidst the on going changes , that is, the Empire to the Republic.
