Abstract

This article is dedicated to a historical analysis of photographs depicting coal miners in Southern Brazil, especially in the regions of São Jerônimo, Rio Grande do Sul, and Criciúma, Santa Catarina, between the years 1945 and 1964. By examining a series of photographs ranging from strikes to the daily life in coal mines, the study highlights details within the images and their historical implications, offering valuable insights to comprehend the social, political, and economic aspects of these workers. The article also explores the absence of women in photographs of political demonstrations, despite their active participation in political struggles during that period. Through a critical analysis of the images, the research aims to enhance the understanding of the work environment in the coal mines of Southern Brazil, emphasizing the significance of visual sources in historical research.
