A degraded republic
brief study of the Jugurthine War of Gaius Sallustius Crispus

Caio Salústio Crispo was a young man who acted politically at the end of the republican government and witnessed profound changes in Roman politics. In his works, we perceive his critical attitude towards these changes and his moralizing discourse that highlights the aspects that contributed to the moral degradation characteristic of his time. The present work has as object one of his works, the Jugurta War, in which we seek to analyze the elements that reflect his theory on the prevalence of vices over virtues at the end of the Roman Republic. For this purpose, we also consider elements outside the text itself - such as context, author's objectives and genre - and interpret this document not only as a product of appropriations from the past, but also as a producer of new representations of it, serving as a vehicle transmission and reframing of memory.
