Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the performance of the Pernambuco Federation for the Progress of Women (FPPF) in the struggle for the expansion of the democratic ideals of civil equality, right to work and education for women in the 1930s. For this we use as sources the Recife periodicals that circulated in the time in question and the FPPF activity reports sent to Rio de Janeiro to its headquarters, the Brazilian Federation for the Progress of Women. As a theoretical support, we use the work of Joan Sott (1989) that categorizes gender as useful for historical analysis, as well as the New Political History, using the concept of Political Culture in the analysis of the construction of a feminist political culture in Brazil. These analyzes allowed us to understand the feminist movement as an important factor for the expansion and conquest of social rights, in the struggle for the consolidation and expansion of democracy in Brazil.
