Abstract

The register is a particular set of semiotic representations, an idea developed by Duval, which comprises three poles: the representation itself, which in order to reach us has a form perceptible by the senses; the represented object; and the content of this representation, which can be different from the represented object. The notion of register is fundamental, since it forms part of Duval's fundamental hypothesis in his semiocognitive theory of intellectual learning. This text addressed the characterization of various semiotic sets with the aim of identifying those that can be classified simply as an unsystematic semiotic set, a systematic semiotic set and a register. The didactic possibilities of this classification were realized.
