Abstract

In Brazil, the selective collection has tradition in social basis, generating work and income for classes in situations of social vulnerability. Nevertheless, faced with the concern of eventual contagion by contact with waste contaminated by the COVID-19 virus, the country adopted protocols that impacted the waste management system and, consequently, the classes as mentioned above. This paper evaluates the activities of the waste pickers organizations' (WPO) in São Paulo city, during the COVID-19 pandemic, showing the impact on the local recyclables market and the efficiency of the health protocols adopted by the WPO. This work contributes to the registration of this sanitary difficult moment and serve as example for future solid waste management protocols.
