Extension Actions on Cardiopulmonary Arrest

Cardiac arrest is a public health problem, requiring immediate interventions to promote cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is necessary to train lay people to conduct emergency procedures. Teachers are a target audience for training due to their work, and the university extension is one way to offer such training. The objective of the research is to investigate the success of the extension actions implemented for elementary school teachers. This is a before and after study carried out in a teaching unit in João Pessoa – PB. The sample consisted of 15 teachers of the institution. The data collection was performed through a structured questionnaire containing five questions related to cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The analysis was performed using descriptive and nonparametric statistics — Wilcoxon test. The sample had a predominance of male individuals. The descriptive statistical analysis showed more correct answers in all questions after the intervention. The non-parametric test showed a greater difference in knowledge after the educational intervention. The research reveals a positive impact of extensionist interventions on teachers' knowledge, as their previous knowledge was deficient to intervene in school emergencies.
