The welfare of dogs and cats is a topic gaining prominence in the national scenario, as these animals are increasingly present in homes and are considered family members. However, the discussion of this topic began in 1964, and currently, there are specific animal welfare criteria to be respected, which are known as “the five freedoms of animal welfare.” In addition to the criteria, laws were enacted that hold offenders responsible for the mistreatment of animals. Even with the existence of awareness-raising instruments, the lack of knowledge about this topic is still notorious, and, in some cases, the abandonment and mistreatment related to these animals. Therefore, the objective of this work is to report the experience of an extension project developed in the municipality of Paudalho, Pernambuco. The team made biweekly visits for 13 months, totaling 26 visits. The theme was addressed through expository material on the concept of well-being and the five freedoms. The listeners had the opportunity to participate actively, and, in the end, they received didactic folders about the subject addressed. Additionally, to interact with a larger audience, a profile was created on Instagram (@seliganasaudeunica). During the program, it was possible to notice a change in preconceived concepts brought about by the new knowledge introduced by the project execution team. Therefore, the combination of face-to-face and social media approaches proved to be an effective tool for disseminating knowledge and changing behavior.
