Abstract

This article analyzes the theme “Popular Sovereignty against the State”, offering an overview of the French Revolution covering the period 1789-1804. The analysis is basically divided into four moments. First, it seeks to examine how a model absolute “representative government” was being built “against popular sovereignty”. Second, it examines the basis that “the sovereignty of the nation resides in the communes”, highlighting the figures of Robespierre and Saint-Just. Third, it investigates how an association was created between a supposed “anarchy of the people” and the concept of “popular sovereignty”. Fourth, it demonstrates the way in which the representative system replaced citizens with constituents, reducing the strenght of popular sovereignty and strengthening government.
