Abstract

This article presents Agamben's and Arendt's arguments for the political difficulties arising from the advent of modern sovereignty. Firstly, I present the Arendtian arguments that explain the difficulty of the effectiveness of political freedom from the establishment of sovereignty as the foundation of state power. Secondly, I show how Agamben uses Arendtian reflections on freedom and sovereignty to point out how the arbitrary power of the absolute sovereign still persists in the nation-state.
